Google Takes Care of Business with New Security Products

Google has launched three new online email security and archiving packages in a move designed to broaden out its Google Apps platform and offer firms of all sizes a cheap, flexible alternative to managing in-house messaging security and compliance technology.

The security services ‘Powered by Postini' work with any mail system, including Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Notes, and are designed to deliver message filtering, encryption and archiving for businesses.

"As threats rise in volume and complexity, and compliance requirements pile up, IT is struggling to find the resources to keep up," said Google director of product management, Scott Petry. "Now, Google can take care of this for you. Organizations of all shapes and sizes can get access to Google's industry leading security and compliance technologies."

The first package, Google Message Filtering, includes Postini's spam and malware filtering products, and is aimed at companies who want to shift the burden of such tasks to a third-party service, said Petry. It will be offered to users for USD 3 per year.

The second, Google Message Security, includes Google Message Filtering along with enhanced virus detection, outbound message processing, and content policy management for companies worried about internal and external threats such as data leaks and compliance violations, he said. It will be offered for per user per year.

The third is Google Message Discovery, which include Google Message Security bundled with a year of message data archiving, retention, and discovery to help companies with legal discovery, Petry said. It will be offered for USD 25 per user per year.

The packages are available online, as well as directly from Google or through channel partners. The new packages are available as part of the Google Apps Premier Edition, which includes Gmail, Google Docs, Google Calendar, Google Talk, and Start Page for creating a home page.

Last year's Postini acquisition has given Google the security services necessary for it to truly compete against Microsoft, Cisco, and Symantec among others in the e-mail market.
