IBM, Sun To Cooperate on Servers
IBM has teamed up with Sun Microsystems to cooperate on server technologies combining their strengths in server business. This move will put pressure on HP, their nearest competitor.
Sun's chief executive Jonathan Schwartz said the relationship "represents a tectonic shift in the market landscape."
As part of the deal, IBM will run Sun’s Solaris operating systems on its Server. To begin with, IBM will use Solaris on its "x" series of servers, which also run Microsoft Corp.'s Windows or the open-source Linux system. However at a later stage, IBM will start preloading Solaris to its mainframe. This means a user already using Sun Solaris can easily shift to IBM servers without much difficulty.
