Video Calls Made Easy with Skype 4.0 Beta
Best known as a provider of free and inexpensive Internet telephony services, Skype has announced that an updated test version of their web communications programme, Skype 4.0 beta for Windows, is now available for download.
The new application for Windows, better known Skype 4.0, is the provider's biggest overhaul since its inception almost five years ago and marks a turning point as Skype matures into a polished platform for communications. A Skype 4.0 beta for Mac OS X is not currently available.
The Skype 4.0 Beta 1 includes support for large image display as also the ability to auto-detect and save system settings for audio/video hardware that is connected for the first time. The new interface offers video chat in full-screen resolution to desktop-based users. Users need to first call a friend and then click on the 'Add Video' option. The new interface also has important function tabs such as call phones, directory and shop.
Version 4.0 has also been designed to make it easier for users to find friends in the Skype directory, as well as discover existing features they may not know about. In addition, Skype 4.0 recognizes more quickly Skype-certified hardware.
“With Skype 4.0, we’ve really focused on making it simple to use.” Mike Bartlett, director of Windows product management for Skype said on a video on its web site, “We’ve looked at the user experience from the time someone hits Skype.com all the way through making their first call, and every aspect of that we’re focusing on making it incredibly simple.”
Skype will evaluate the beta version throughout the summer before committing to a full release at a later date.
