No Android Based Handsets till 2009, Says Reports

The Wall Street Journal recently reported that Mobile phones designed around Google's Android software may not be available until the fourth quarter of this year, and some companies are struggling to even meet that deadline. The paper cited sources familiar to the project as saying that mobile carriers Sprint and China Mobile may not be releasing their Android handsets until 2009.

One reason, why Sprint is delaying to launch an Android handset this year is that the Android operating system comes with Google services, and the wireless carrier would prefer to offer its own Sprint-branded features. On the other hand China Mobile, which had planned to launch an Android-powered phone in the third quarter, will delay the launch because of difficulty in translating Roman characters in the Android software into Chinese, claimed Journal.

The handsets aren't the only problem. Software developers are also grumbling about Android, the Journal said. Google continues to make changes to the software, making it difficult for other software developers to create programs that work with Android.

Google had said eight months ago that the first phones to be built under the Android partnership umbrella would come out in the second half of 2008 and commitments from various handset makers and carriers appear to support this initial commitment.
