Asian Online Gaming To Lead The Market By 2009

With the rising popularity of online gaming worldwide, speculations are on its future revenue growth. There are more people playing World of Warcraft today than indoor plumbing 100 years ago. There are more people with blogs today than Internet connections 10 years ago.

Wikipedia defines Online gaming as, “a technology rather than a genre, a mechanism for connecting players together rather than a particular pattern of gameplay. Online games are played over some form of computer network, now typically on the Internet. One advantage of online games is the ability to connect to multiplayer games, although single-player online games are quite common as well.”

A recent In-Stat report predicts that revenue for the online gaming market in the Asia-Pacific region is expected to grow rapidly between 2008 and 2013.

The key findings of this research reflects a total growth of USD 21.1 billion in 2013 for the Asia-Pacific online gaming market, MMORPGs (Massively Multimedia Online Role Playing Game) remains the mainstream of Asia's online gaming market. There are about 10 million MMORPG users in the world and their population is doubling every two years. China would be the fastest-growing market for online gaming and it is expected to become the largest market in Asia by year 2009.

According to the high-tech market research firm, In-Stat, the key factors driving this growth include growing household Internet penetration, increased content development for online-specific games, and the unique experience that online gaming offers.

Stephanie Ethier, In-Stat analyst, said “the online gaming market in Asia-Pacific is growing in tandem with the significant increase in consumer Internet use. In addition, the number of market players is rapidly expanding and therefore, improved content and a greater variety of games are keys to success in this market.”

Quentin Staes-Polet, head of IBM's online gaming practice in Asia and Joey Alarilla, president of the Asian Gaming Journalists Association, in an article on ‘IBM and the Future of Online Games’ posted that game makers are extending the online experience to mobile devices, online gaming environment is pioneering the Internet of the future, and most importantly online games can have a role to play in business, politics and urban planning.
